Friday (today), the Cinco de Mayo Festivalito celebration will be held at Milonga Sin Nombre with food, music, and dancing. There will be an opening for the Wabi-Sabi: 2nd Annual AAPI Group Exhibition displaying works by nearly 30 artists. The Los Aviles concert will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Peruvian guitarist Óscar Avilés.
Saturday and Sunday, the Old Town Fiesta Cinco de Mayo will take place. The ballet Giselle will be performed at Balboa Theatre.
Saturday, there will be a Multi-house Lawn Program at the International Cottages in Balboa Park. At the Ocean Beach Library, there will be a Korean Pungmul performance. In conjunction with the Old Town Cinco de Mayo celebration, there will be a Gaslamp Cinco de Mayo celebration. A UNESCO Ancestral Maize Festival will take place at Park and Market. Kilowatt Brewing will host the Convoy Nights AANHPI Heritage Month event. Cinema Little Italy is back in action and they will be showing the comedy Friends by Chance (Tutto Quello Che Vuoi) at the Firehouse. The play Stir will open at the Old Globe. Comedian Hasan Minhaj will perform at the San Diego Civic Theatre. Manic Hispanic will be at the Casbah. There will be a Beatles vs. Stones tribute band showdown at Point Blank in Pacific Beach.
Sunday, the House of Poland will hold its annual Lawn Program at the international cottages. The 4th Annual Escondido Cinco de Mayo Festival will take place in Grape Day Park. The Soap Factory will hold a Chicano Music Festival. The Festival de Música Latina at MiraCosta College in Oceanside will feature several live bands. San Diego Oasis will hold a Thai Taste Sensation event where you can sample food from a number of local Thai restaurants. Asayake Taiko will perform at UCSD. The Ahaana Festival returns to USD. At Humphreys Backstage Live you can hear Mando Cordova and his band perform. The One Voice World Music Choir will perform at the Lightbox Theater. Joseph Decosimo will be performing Appalachian music at Verbatim Books. Mariachi El Bronx will be at the Belly Up.
Tuesday, Warwick's will host an online talk with acclaimed Native American author Tommy Orange who will discuss his new book, Wandering Stars. The USD Mariachi Ensemble will perform in the Shiley Theatre in Camino Hall.
Next Thursday, the 4-day annual Gator by the Bay Festival kicks off at Spanish Landing Park (Harbor Drive) featuring live music, gumbo, jambalaya, beignets and 10,000 pounds of crawfish! The tremendously popular group Celtic Women will perform at the Civic Theatre. The San Diego Italian Film Festival will screen Nostalgia at the La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas. The USD Gamelan Ensemble, led by Dr. Meghan Hynson will perform Balinese Gamelan music and feature some guest artists. Comedian Ahmed Ahmed will perform at Mic Drop Comedy.
Next Friday, at the La Jolla Community Center, the Center for World Music will present the Namad Ensemble who will perform classical Iranian Dastgah music and will feature Pejman Hadadi on percussion, Saeed Kamjoo on the kamânche, and Kourosh Taghavi on the setâr. The 1st Annual Dia de las Madres, a special Mother's Day Celebration, will take place at the California Center for the Arts. Mariachi sol de Mexico will perform at the Sycuan Live & Up Close Theatre.
Next Saturday and Sunday, the 36th Annual Balboa Park Pow Wow will take place and will honor the San Diego American Indian Health Center.
Next Saturday, the Chinese Historical Museum will present an online talk on the Maritime Silk Road. The Latine Entretejida Exhibition of textiles will open at the Visions Museum of Textile Art. The exhibition will run through to October 5th. There will be a South India Kuchipudi Traditional Indian Dance Performance for Children at the Mission Valley Library. At the International Cottages' Hall of Nations, there will be a Ukrainian Dance Workshop for kids. At the North University Community Library, Professor of Humanities Gwenyth Mapes will discuss Frida Kahlo and Her Art.
Next Sunday, in addition to the aforementioned Balboa Park Pow Wow and the final day of the Gator by the Bay Festival, the Chitra’s Varnam – A Film Music Program at Lincoln High School will feature Padma Bhushan K.S. Chitra (Vocal), Sharreth (Music Director), Nishad, Anamika (Vocal) and Nine Bollywood Musicians will be singing film songs in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu.
Local theatrical productions include The 39 Steps at New Village Arts in Carlsbad, Stir at the Old Globe Theatre, and Sense of Decency at the North Coast Rep.
